Twitter’s Alexa Rank

Okay, help me out here.  I notice that Twitter’s Alexa rank is 13 as of today.  Now, I know that is extremely high, but I’m trying to figure out what the other higher traffic sites are.

Obviously, we have Google, Yahoo, Facebook…  MySpace has been falling behind, but is still ahead of Twitter at number 11, and MSN has the same rank of 11.  Of course, MSN now splits their traffic with Bing.com.

Microsoft’s corporate site is a little lower, despite all the help requests they must get.  I’m delighted to see that AOL is well behind.  (I’ve never been an AOL fan.)

So here are my problems:

1) I don’t know how Alexa actually comes up with their numbers.  For example, I know that some of my highest traffic sites are not ranked as highly in Alexa that have actual traffic numbers of less than half.

2) And this is where it starts to come back closer to the theme of social media…  What are the high traffic sites that I have overlooked? My guess is that most will have strong social networking components.

Please comment with help on this.  (Or am I just trying to stay away from productive work by even worrying about this?)
