In what I think is a brilliantly fun idea (and a clever way to get a massive dose of PR), NASA is allowing anyone a chance to submit their name (or anything else – more on that in a sec) in a simple web form that will be uploaded to a database with other names and information that will be included in a microchip being sent with the Mars Science Laboratory rover in 2011. Finally, a real chance to get your name ‘out there’.
Here’s the fun part, as found on Reddit (reported by Mashable), apparently the form fields are limitless. In other words, not only could you include your name, but it seems that your could type in thousands of more characters next to it and the form apparently accepts it. I’m sure the form is being abused as I type by all sorts of people, but either way, if you’ve ever wanted to send links to your dating profile to Mars in the hopes that the triple breasted Martian in Total Recall will see it – now is your chance!
I took the high road, and submitted what I believe to be a fitting candidate for this program:

And confirming my submission for Mr. Douglas Quaid:

I know, very original, right?
I’m going to do a real one and print out my certificate and hang it on the wall – talk about credentials!
For more fun submissions, check out this Mars search I did on Reddit, it should keep you occupied for a bit
